Fire and smoke in tunnels, ...

but as part of a plan

Wichmannshausen: Huge fire test in the A44-Tunnel BoyneburgOn 24, 25 and 26 September 2024, there was a lot of fire and smoke in three tunnels on the A44 motorway near Kassel - but it was all planned and controlled.

For the further construction of the A44 motorway in Hesse, I.F.I. successfully carried out fire and smoke tests in the Trimberg, Spitzenberg and Boyneburg tunnels between Waldkappel and Sontra.

Using our specially developed fire test equipment, we generated fire a total of 12 times at different locations.

Fire tests are important milestones on the way to the approval and commissioning of a tunnel: among other things, they serve to realistically test the fire detection, the alarm systems and the safety equipment of the tunnel such as the ventilation systems. Not only is it checked whether the fire is detected within the specified time, but also whether the smoke is extracted from the tunnel without endangering people.

Fire tests in tunnels are often spectacular and in many cases the press is part of the public. This was also the case with the fire tests in the Boyneburg tunnel, and the Hessische/Niedersächsische Allgemeine (HNA) published an article online.
